Thelma Handy Spangler, 90, died Friday, January 22, 2016 at her residence in the Mount Pleasant Retirement Village, Monroe, OH. She was born in Patrick County, Virginia on March 13, 1925 to the late Daniel Lee Handy and Callie Mae Handy.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Benjamin Lesley Spangler; her sisters: Myrtle Goard, Pauline Clifton; and her brother James Denver Handy.
Surviving are her two daughters: Phyllis Spangler Bohning (Miles) and Vicki Spangler Perry; four Grandchildren: Chris Satchell (Jena), Mark Bohning (Loel), Tracy Bohning and Jennifer Bohning; one great-grandchild: Trevor Satchell; and two sisters: Delcie Blades and Irene Joyce.
Thelma graduated from Meadows of Dan High School and was retired from the US Postal Service. She was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed volunteering with the Girl Scouts and participating on a ladies bowling league. She lived in Springfield, Vesta, and Martinsville, Virginia before relocating to Monroe, Ohio.
Thelma loved to travel and visited over 13 countries in Europe and Central America. She was an avid seamstress and enjoyed cooking, gardening and scrapbooking. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she loved to make the season memorable with her talent for decorating and entertaining.
A Eulogy will be held Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will immediately follow in the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, 2511 Jeb Stuart Hwy, Meadows of Dan, VA 24120.
