Mrs. Velma Hawks Haynes, 91, of Mt. Airy after a long illness, won her battle to go on to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, March 09, 2017 from Priddy Manor in King. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7. Born in Surry County, on December 16, 1925, to the late Nathaniel and Minnie McGlothern Hawks. She was the last of this generation. Mrs. Haynes retired from Spencer’s and was a faithful member of Shining Light Baptist Church for as long as her health permitted. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Mrs. Haynes was an avid gardener, enjoyed reading and always kept a great sense of humor. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Ava and James Clayton; sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Darlene Haynes, Anthony “Tony” and Deborah Haynes; grandchildren and spouses, Chris and Kim Clayton, Dawn and Jon Duvall, Marty and April Haynes and James Lineback; great grandchildren, Emily, Daniel, Levi, Bethany and Brett. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Haynes was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Hunk” Haynes; sisters, Mallie Crawford, Ila Mickey, Zona Cockerham, Lillian Hodges, Bertha Shinault, Margie Scott, Pearl Ramey and Zora Golding and a brother, Garnett Hawks. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Skyline Memory Gardens with Rev. Elmo Hiatt officiating. There will not be a formal visitation at the funeral home although friends and family are welcome to go by to give their condolences. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to all the friends, neighbors and family who assisted with care, visits and prayers during Mrs. Haynes illness, but a special thanks to Marie Arrington, Teresa Smallwood, Bill and Lydia Reynolds and Gary Fore for the extra care they gave.
