Mrs. Velva Dishmon Rakes, age 82 of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was born in Danville, Virginia on September 18, 1929 to the late Daniel Witcher Dishmon and Susan Etta Rakes Dishmon. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rakes was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Rakes; a great-granddaughter, Marissa Paige Woods; and a sister, Betty Southard. She was a member of Stuart Baptist Church and had retired from United Elastic.
Mrs. Rakes is survived by two daughters, Linda Susan Lust of Roanoke and Teresa Woods of Reidsville, North Carolina; one son, Thomas J. Rakes of Stuart; five grandchildren, Joshua Rakes of Stuart, Sarah Clemmons of Roanoke; and Jason Woods, Chris Woods and Derrick Conant, all of Deltona, Florida; nine great-grandchildren, Andrew Rakes and Logan Rakes of Stuart, Zac Clemmons of Roanoke, and Emilo, Javier, Brendan, Caleb, Selena and Jordan Woods all of Deltona, Florida.
Funeral services for Mrs. Rakes will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. Dr. Clint Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.
