Mrs. Vergie Utt Hiatt age 88 of Cana, VA went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Hertiage Hall/Laurel Meadows in Laurel Fork, VA. She was born April 19, 1924 in Carroll County to the late George V. and Hattie McMillian Utt. She was married to Melvin G. Hiatt in 1947, they shared 65 wonderful years together. A beloved Mother and grandmother, she will be fondly be remembered as providing a loving home to her family and for all her work as a caregiver. She was an amazing woman with a generous heart. She was Loved by her family, friends and neighbors. She will be remembered by many for all the special times she spent with them on her front porch. As an avid home cook and canner, she made the best fried apple pies, cornbread, and chocolate pies imaginable. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her spirit will live on through our memories. Mrs. Hiatt was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Melvin Hiatt of the home, a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Cleve Vass, Cana, VA, a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Dorothy A. Hiatt, Cana, VA, four beloved grandchildren, Tina Vass Smith, Hillsville, VA, Danielle Hiatt, Ararat, VA, Kelly Hiatt-Thomas, and spouse, John Paul Thomas, Floyd, VA and Timothy Vass and spouse, April Vass, Fancy Gap, VA, two great grandchildren, Jossie Irene Vass and Audrey Claire Thomas, three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Vernon and Frances Utt, Lonnie and Mabel Utt, Wallace and Movita Utt and Louise Utt all of Cana, VA. many nieces, nephews and special friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hiatt was preceded in death by three brothers Leonard, Utt, Jim Utt and Edsel Utt and a sister, Ola Haynes. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Monday, September 16, 2012 at Oak Grove Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Oscar Hill with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Sunday at Moody Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express much gratitude to the caring staff at Laurel Meadows and Mountain Valley Hospice.
