Mrs. Verlie Viola Ball Sumner, age 81 of Mt. Airy, passed away Sunday, November 28, 2010 at the Woltz Hospice Home. Mrs. Sumner was born in Surry County, July 6, 1929 to Charlie and Maggie Simmons Ball. She was a loving homemaker and was a certified nursing assistant. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Freddy R. and June Sumner; Stephen W. and Debbie Sumner; Tony M. and Wanda B. Sumner all of Mt. Airy; Johnny Sumner of Claudville, VA; Luke and Beth Sumner of King; grandchildren, Todd McCraw, Julie McCraw, Joshua Sumner, Stephen Sumner, Brooke Parker, Chase Sumner, Annette Reece and husband Bryan; great grandchildren, Zack Venable, Brittany Venable, Summer Rain Goins, Jessie LeAnn Parks, Laiken Reece and Ella Reece; special niece and nephew, Donna Bruner of Mt. Airy, Clarence Phillips of Checotah, OK; and special friends, Ann Scott and Gina Sumner. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sumner was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Sumner; a sister, Vernell B. Phillips and a brother, Herman Ball. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Larry Thomas. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to The Woltz Hospice Home at 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Central Continuing Care for the years of dedication and love and also to the staff of the Woltz Hospice Home for special care given to Mrs. Sumner during her time there.
