Mrs. Vernice Simmons, 92, widow of Mr. Grover Samuel Simmons, of Dobson passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 5, 2011 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. She was born in Surry County on April 12, 1919 to the late Thomas Houston and Neva Holder Snow. Mrs. Simmons was a homemaker who dedicated her life to God and her family. She was a faithful member of Salem Fork Christian Church as long as her health permitted. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughters, Shelvey Simmons Crump of Pinehurst and Anne Simmons of Mount Airy; five grandchildren, who she adored, Gary Crump of Swansboro, Wanda and husband Bill Bergan of Aberdean, Amy and husband Marty Doss, Dena and husband Jarod Wood, Sam Newman and fiancé Nicole Jones all of Mount Airy; her great-grandchildren, Logan and Brad Couce, Jordan Doss, Nicholas Wood, an expectant great-grandson, Riley Doss and Corporal Brett Doss; two sisters, Lena Cockerham and Tommie Wilmoth. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by four sisters, Stella Wilmoth, Pearl Perry, Cassie Wilmoth, Thursie Riddle and two brothers, Connie Snow and Otis Snow. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday October 7, 2011 at Salem Fork Christian Church by Rev. June Haislip with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Fork Christian Church 2245 Zephyr Road Dobson, NC 27017. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Woltz Hospice Home, especially Erik, Becky and Amanda for the loving compassionate care given to Mrs. Simmons during her stay there.
