Mrs. Virginia Carty Self Black, age 89 of Mt. Airy, passed away Monday, September 5, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Black was born in Abingdon, VA December 12, 1921 to Maiden and Ella Holbrooks Carty. She was an avid bowler, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and sister who dearly loved all her family and friends. She dearly loved her church family and her extended family that she worked with. Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine Brannock of Mt. Airy; Shirley and Kenneth Upchurch of Denver; Vonna Easter of Mt. Airy; Betty and Bill Smith of Thomasville; Glenda and Burley Johnson of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Linda Self of Mt. Airy; David and Charlotte Self of Powhatan, VA; nineteen grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren; sixteen great-great grandchildren; a sister, Grace Wooten of Kingsport, TN; and a brother, Clarence Ray Carty of Wilkesboro as well as very special nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Black was preceded in death by the father of her children, Vince M. Self; her second husband, David A. Black; a son, Douglas Self; a great-great granddaughter Keturah Buford, sisters, Ozelle Huttle, Rosabelle Richardson and Frances Carty and brothers, John Carty, Bill Carty, Hess Carty, Bob Carty, Walter Carty and Hoover Carty. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 9, 2011 at Friendly Tabernacle by Rev. Dud Spencer, Rev. Roby Wilcox and Rev. Kenneth Upchurch. Entombment will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Friendly Tabernacle at 574 Slate Rd. Mt. Airy, NC. 27030 c/o Virginia Black Memorials.
