Mrs. Virginia Harris Hodges, age 81 of Roanoke, and formerly of Patrick County, passed away on December 23, 2009 at home, surrounded by family. She was born January 29, 1928 in Meadows of Dan to Benjamin H. Harris and Claudia Agee Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents, her cherished stepfather, George S. Wood; three brothers Ben, Jr., Marvin Harris and Rufus Wood; sisters-in-law. Essie Harris and Thelma Wood; and son, James Hodges, Jr.
Mrs. Hodges is survived by her husband of 41 years, James E. Hodges, daughters Ruth Zein, and Jane Kotulka and husband Gene; daughter-in-law Nan Hodges; and six grandchildren, Christopher and Caitlin Hodges; Jeisson, Maria, Julieth and Santiago Kotulka; two brothers, Esmond Harris and Claude Wood; two sisters-in-law, Mary Harris and Mary Lee Wood, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Holding bachelors and masters degrees from Radford University, Mrs. Hodges worked in education for nearly 40 years. As a teacher in Patrick County, she encouraged many students to go to college by driving them to campuses for interviews and tours. She retired in Grayson County as Director of Instruction and Personnel.
Family and friends will be welcome at visitation on Sunday, December 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. The funeral service will be held at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church on Monday, December 28 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Mickey White of Mays Memorial United Methodist Church and Rev. Fred Gilley officiating. Interment will follow in the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church cemetery.
