Mrs. Wilma Lee Tolbert Jones, age 89 of Mt. Airy, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Twelve Oaks Retirement Center. Mrs. Jones was born in Surry County on August 30, 1923 to Walter Lee and Hallie Niston Tolbert. Surviving are sons, Steve Jones of Mt. Airy and daughter-in-law, Mary Frances Jones of Advance, and Harvey Jones of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Laura Leigh VanDyk and husband Paul of San Antonio TX, Alicia Lynn Peters of Advance, Brad Jones and wife Susan of Charlotte, and Michelle Jones of Jacksonville FL, a sister, Mary Lou Turner and husband Ray; a brother, Walter Tolbert, Jr.; a devoted nephew, Eddie Easter, family friend, Paul Boyd, all of Greensboro, and six great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, John Harvey Jones and brothers, Glenn and Darnell Tolbert. Mrs. Jones was retired from Davis Department Store in Winston-Salem where she was a buyer in Foundations. When asked about her job, fitting girdles and bras, she would quip "I'm in the meat-packing business." She stayed busy throughout her life growing flowers, surrounded by items she made herself, including knit or crocheted afghans and doll clothes often shared with friends and family. She and Mr. Jones were inseparable for 72 years and loved serving their church together. They enjoyed trips to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the beach, always together. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Oakdale Cemetery by Rev. Alex Martin. There will not be a formal visitation.
