Mrs.Barbara Stewart Fields (Fenimore)

Barbara S. Fields, 83, of Mt. Airy, left us for her place in heaven on Monday, November 27 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. A resident of Mt Airy since 2004, Barbara was born on February 23rd, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland to Nelson S. and Dorothy Fenimore. She spent much of her childhood in Miami and Clearwater, FL where she met and married her high school sweetheart Herb.

Barbara shared a life of travel and military service with her husband of 40 years Col. Herbert R. Fields, a pilot in the US Air Force. Barbara moved to Mt Airy from the Columbus-Tryon area where she had retired after living in nearly 20 states and in Spain. She was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend to many who will miss her warm smile and love for family.

Barbara was a prolific scrap booker who created dozens of albums highlighting every place she had lived or visited. She researched family genealogy in the 1970’s, documenting family history from several generations. In her later years, Barbara was an avid doll collector and doll house builder, opening her extensive collection for public viewing during several Christmas seasons. An active volunteer, Barbara participated in various ministries at Central United Methodist Church; as a docent at the Mt. Airy Museum; served for 2 years as a Surry County guardian ad litem; and was a graduate of the Mt. Airy Citizen’s Police Academy, receiving a certificate of completion in 2013.

Barbara loved the landscape, rich history and people of North Carolina and Virginia. She always said her heart was in the mountains.

Barbara is survived by her sons Mike, of Landrum, SC; Jeff (Janelle), of Fayetteville, NY; Randy (Cynthia), of Lake Norman, NC; and Doug (Kathy), of Woodlawn, VA; grandchildren Jennifer, Winston-Salem, NC; Christin, Bristow, VA; Nathaniel, Phoenix, AZ; Erick, Brooklyn, NY; Anna, Albany, NY; Ashley, Rutherfordton, NC; and Jessica, Lake Norman, NC; and 6 great grandchildren; a sister Debbie of Garland, TX and brother Stewart, St. John’s Island, SC. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Herb in 1993.
