Ms. Jessie May Martin Slate, age 69 of Bassett, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at her home. She was born in Patrick County on February 4, 1944 to the late Andy and Gladys Clark Martin. In addition to her parents, Ms. Slate was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Georgia Ann Burgart; one brother, Akers Martin; and one sister, Rachel Wade. She was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church.
Ms. Slate is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jerone and Lynn Mabe of Stanleytown and George Burgart of Bassett; two grandchildren, Andy Mabe and Baylee Mabe; two sisters, Frances J. Hopkins of Stuart and Margaret Pendleton of Stuart; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred Junior and Betty Martin of Stuart, Willie Noel and Ruby Martin of Lawsonville, North Carolina, Franklin D.R. and Mary Hilda Martin of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Ms. Slate will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Rev. J. R. Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in the Martin Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of her sister, Frances Hopkins, 117 Andy Martin Lane, Stuart.
