Ms. Mary Virginia Louise Cummings

Ms. Mary Virginia Louise Cummings, age 78 of Patrick Springs, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2007 in the V. A. Medical Center in Salem. She was born in Patrick County on May 26, 1929 to the late Casper Doctor "Dock" Cummings and Sallie Mae Koger Cummings. In addition to her parents, Ms. Cummings was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil Edwin, Clayton Hollis and Charles Rufus Cummings, and a niece, Mary Ruth Ullrich. She was a graduate from Hardin Reynolds Memorial School and the Medical College of Virginia where she received her pharmaceutical degree. She had served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Martinsville, and had retired as a pharmacist from Harder's Drug Store in Bassett. She was a member of the Dan River Emmaus Community and the Eastern Crabbet Arabian Horse Society.
Ms. Cummings is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Ullrich, and Howard L., Sr. of Patrick Springs; four nieces, Marian A. Ullrich, Marie A. Ullrich, Myra K. Trent, and husband, Thomas, and Michelle Leombruno; three nephews, Howard L. Ullrich, Jr., Melvin Aldrich, II and Zackery Turnbow; and one great-niece, Emily Nicole Trent.
Funeral services for Ms. Cummings will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Sarah Doss and Rev. Father Rene Castillo officiating. Burial will follow in the Cummings-Trent Family Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Volunteer Services for Patients and Staff, V.A. Medical Center, 1970 Roanoke Boulevard, Ward 2-2, Salem, Virginia 24153.
