Mrs. Myrtle Easter Sykes, 80, of Mount Airy, went home to be with the Lord from her home on Thursday, January 27, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 23, 1930, in Carroll County, VA, to the late Luther and Lela Jane Easter Easter. She retired from Ray's Starlight Restaurant, where she worked as a cook. She was well known for her chicken pot pie for which customers traveled from near and far. She was an avid Redskin's fan who commented recently "they are not doing very well this season, are they?" She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Ruth Ann Harvey of Clear Spring, MD, Mary Wood and her husband, Larry Wood, of Elkin, and Linda Smith and her husband, Davis Smith, of Dobson; a devoted son with whom she made her home, Douglas Sykes of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Penny Hiatt of Mount Airy; and a brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Helen Easter of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sykes was preceded in death by her husband, James William Sykes, Sr.; two sons, Gary Richard Sykes, Sr. and James William Sykes, Jr.; two sisters, Margie Fleming and Mabel Smith; and a brother, Garnet Easter. The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 29, 2011, at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson, with the Rev. Larry Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Dobson City Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Following the graveside service, the family would like to invite everyone to Bear Creek Baptist Church Fellowship Hall to socialize with them. Special thanks to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their loving, compassionate care.
