Nancy Ruth O'Neal Bunker

Mrs. Nancy Ruth O’Neal Bunker, 82, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday night, February 23, 2025, at her home. Mrs. Bunker was born August 16, 1942, in Surry County, one of five children born to the late Claude Columbus and Dora Blanche Key O’Neal. Nancy was reared in the Franklin community and graduated from North Surry High School in 1960. She married Wade Chang Bunker, a member of the United States Air Force, on August 20, 1960. Together, they shared 23 years of love, dedication, and support through the challenges of military life. Throughout their journey, Nancy was a steadfast partner, embracing the sacrifices and triumphs that come with being a military spouse. After her husband’s military career ended, she loved spending time with family and friends, and she will be remembered for her boundless love and dedication to her family. She is survived by a daughter, Dorene Bunker; a son and daughter-in-law, Wade Garrett and Rebecca Bunker; a granddaughter, Emily Pratt and her husband, Bobby; a great-grandson, Josiah; a great-granddaughter, Hailey; three sisters-in-law, Nancy O’Neal, Eunice O’Neal, and Marian O’Neal; three brothers-in-law, Jerry Combs, John Hemmings, and Wayne Eng Bunker; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bunker was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Chang Bunker; a sister, Mary Ann Combs; three brothers, Claude Steven “Steve” O’Neal, Gary Wayne O’Neal, and Ronald Rex O’Neal; and two sisters-in-law, Betsy Hemmings and Frances Bunker. A service of worship and celebration of Nancy’s life will be held Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Brother Tim Smith officiating. No formal visitation will be held; however, friends may greet the family after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Piney Grove Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1022, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
