Nancy Marshall Garner

Nancy Marshall Garner, 84 of Eden, North Carolina went to meet her Lord and Savior as she passed away peacefully on June 5, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer.  Nancy was born on September 3, 1938, in Mount Airy, North Carolina.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Vernon Garner and Bobby Hooker; her sons, Steven Hooker and Gregory Hooker; her parents, Leroy and Lucy Marshall; her sister, Barbara June Scott; her brothers, Robert Marshall, Ronald (Dynamite) Marshall, Jerry Marshall, and Buddy Marshall; her great-granddaughter, Addilynn Hooker.  She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Hooker Hylton (Jerry), and Lisa Hooker; her seven grandchildren, Jay Hylton (Mary), Amy Morey (Rex), Leigh Anne Hylton Gravatt (Justin), Allison Hite (Steven), Crystal Perkins (Sam), Josh Hooker (Holly), and Melia Burke (Justin); her twenty great-grandchildren, Kursten and Christian Hylton, Payton and Cooper Morey, Jackson and Jillian Gravatt, Hylton, Spencer, and Virginia Katherine Hite, Toby, Quentin, and Camryn Perkins, Aiden, Everly and Ruthie Hooker, Payton, Reylan, Jackson, Levi and Eli Burke; her sisters, Lucy Venable, Brenda Haynes, and Dianne Heath (Larry).  She also leaves behind numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Nancy was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she was active in a number of ministries, including Widows for Christ, a cause that she devoted a number of hours to over the years.  She was a graduate of Mount Airy High School, Class of 1956, and loved attending their reunions and quarterly gatherings.  Her home was filled with the smell of baked goods and good music.  She had a reputation for having one of the best pound cakes in North Carolina with her specialties including sour cream, her mother’s signature lemon, and her twist, lemon blueberry.  Through the years she often made most of her grandchildren’s birthday cakes and was also famous for her pecan rolls, German chocolate cake and at Christmas, her red velvet cake.  She loved music and traveling to various gospel concerts.  Some of her favorite artists outside of gospel included her love of the King – Elvis, Oak Ridge Boys, Patsy Cline, and Alabama.  She was an avid shopper who loved to find a good deal and was always quick to share how much money she saved with her purchases.

A special thank you to Hospice of Rockingham County, especially Tabitha, who shepherded Nancy through this process.  Also thank you to Brookdale Senior Living for the loving care they provided her over the last several months.

Visitation will be held at 3:00 p.m. and a memorial service held directly afterwards at 4:00 p.m. on June 17th at Mayo Christian Church, 4949 George Taylor Road, Spencer, Virginia 24165.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County or to Relay for Life.  Moody Funeral Home in Stuart assisted the family with the arrangements, and online condolences may be sent by visiting www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
