Nancy Sophia Hanes Hamlin

Mrs. Nancy Sophia Hanes Hamlin, 78, of 909 Rockford Road, Dobson passed away Thursday, September 14, 2006 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Hamlin was born in Surry County on April 10, 1928 to Grover Watson Hanes Sr. and Nancy Emma Fields Hanes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Howard Cleveland Hamlin; two sisters, Vetra Hanes McClellan and Irene Hanes Roane; and one brother, Grover Watson Hanes Jr. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church for over fifty years and was the pianist for twenty years. She was a graduate of Mountain Park High School and retired from Chatham Manufacturing Company in Elkin, NC, as a secretary after 46 years of service. Mrs. Hamlin also worked for a short period of time, after her graduation, in Washington, DC for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Hamlin Gentry and son-in-law, J. Samuel Gentry Jr. of Mount Airy, NC; a grandson, Samuel Hamlin Gentry of Raleigh, NC; a granddaughter, Nancy Ruth Gentry of Chapel Hill, NC; one brother, Isom Bobby Hanes of Mountain Park, NC; two brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday at Salem Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby Lewis will conduct the service. The family will receive friends at Salem Baptist Church on Saturday evening from 7 until 8:30 PM. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund.
