Nedie Mae Handy Hiatt

Mrs. Nedie Mae Handy Hiatt, age 86 of Mount Airy passed away on Thursday afternoon November 9, 2023, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mount Airy.  She was born May 1, 1937, in Patrick County to the late Burley Handy and Mindy Louisa Vipperman Handy Hiatt.  She loved to play bingo, work word search puzzles, and go fishing (she loved to catch them but definitely not eat them). Her biggest love was to play the ole time blue grass music, the louder the better.  Her family said that she had the best fried tators and corn bread, and you couldn’t beat her homemade blackberry jam.  Left to cherish her memory are two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Kevin Goins and Annie and Tommy Jefferson; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Millie Hiatt; grandchildren, Tiffany Hiatt, Michael Harrell and wife Pansy, Brandon Goins, Bradley Goins, and Sarah Holleman; great-grandchildren, Natalie Harrell, Isaiah Harrell, Michael Harrell, Titus Harrell, and Hunter Cunningham; and a brother and two sisters-in-law, Jack and Hazel Handy, and Mary Faye Hiatt.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hiatt was preceded in death by her first husband, Moure Dillard Hiatt; her second husband, Johnny William Hiatt, Sr.; an infant daughter, Bessie Hiatt; a son, Dillard “Buck” Hiatt; two sisters, Ocie Belle Handy and Delcie Cassady; brother, Larry Hiatt; and her stepfather, Frank Hiatt.  Graveside services will be held on Tuesday November 14, 2023, at 2:00pm in the Leonard Family Cemetery with Brother Michael Harrell officiating.  The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home from 12:30pm until time to leave for the graveside service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leonard Family Cemetery, c/o Randy Hiatt, 222 Welch Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.  The Hiatt family would like to give a big thank you to the activity’s director and staff of Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Mount Airy for all of the love, care, and fun given to Nedie during her time there.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
