Mrs. Nellie Gilley Hunter, 89, of Mount Airy, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. Born October 27, 1928, in Surry County, she was the daughter of the late Edgar James and Octavia Harris Gilley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Clyde Monroe Hunter; two daughters, Carole Hunter Walker and Cindy Hunter Hicks; a son, Timothy Clyde Hunter; three brothers, Calvin Gilley, Wade Gilley, and John Gilley; and two sisters, Helen Gilley Collins and Peggy Gilley Ward. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Dr. Charles W. Houghton of Roanoke, VA; her grandchildren, Bryan and Lara Wolfe of New Glarus, WI, Jennifer W. and Dave Thomason of Roanoke, VA, and Tara W. and Matt Cruise of Dobson; and nine great-grandchildren, Catherine Poston, Michael Wolfe, Morgan Wolfe, Isaac Wolfe, Drake Cruise, Jacob Myers, Avery Taylor, Abigail Smitherman, and Cierra Smitherman. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Inez Gilley Simmons of Jonesville and Mildred and John George of Kernersville; a sister-in-law, Allene Williams Gilley of Mount Airy; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; a special cousin, Eva Sue Towe of Mount Airy; a dear friend, Dolly Williams of Mount Airy; and a beloved caregiver, Jenice “Roxey” Bailey of Stokesdale. Nellie was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, a volunteer for Holly Springs Ruritan Club, and former owner of Hunter’s Styling Salon. Tirelessly devoted to her family, she and her husband, Clyde, spent many hours visiting and helping their children and grandchildren. Her time spent knitting, crocheting, sewing, or cooking was a wonderful gift to her family. A service of worship and celebration of Nellie’s life will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Rickey L. Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care and compassion shown by the staff at the Jacobs Creek Nursing and Rehab Center and the staff at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home.
