Mrs. Nellie Watts Appling Wylie, age 104, of Ararat, VA, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 in the Skilled Nursing Unit at Northern Hospital of Surry County.  Mrs. Wylie was born in Monroe County, West Virginia on April 10, 1915 to the late Richard Clark and Maggie Blankenship Appling.  Mrs. Wylie was one of the last living daughters of a confederate soldier R.C. Appling.  During her 104 years, she touched many lives; spreading her joy to everyone she came in contact with. Left to cherish her memories are grandchildren, Pat and Rick Harper, Scott and Angela Wylie, Joy and Jonathan Large, Cathy and Dave Lusk; great grandchildren, Richard Harper III and fiancé  Emily, Christian Ruscelloni, Elleigh Large, Nate Large, Aubreigh Large, Marina Wylie, Kayla Siebert and husband Jon, Hannah Hobbs.  In addition to her parents Mrs. Wylie was preceded in death by her husband, Claude “Tot” Wylie; daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Charles Moore; son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Dolores Wylie as well as two infant children, Ronald and Margaret Wylie and a great grandchild, Benjamin Andrew Harper.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy with services conducted by the grandson, Christian Ruscelloni.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time for the service at Moody Funeral home in Mt. Airy.  Another service will take place on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 3:00 PM at Gap Mills Methodist Church in Gap Mills, West Virginia.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family would like to say special thanks and express their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff of the Skilled Care Unit at Northern Hospital of Surry County for all the love and care shown to Mrs. Wylie during her 10 years there. In lieu of flowers the family asks to consider making donations in memory of Nellie Wylie to The Skilled Nursing Unit at Northern Hospital of Surry County, or contact one of her family members.
