Nora Frances McCreary Chilton

Mrs. Nora Frances McCreary Chilton, 90, of Pilot Mountain, passed away Friday, January 20, 2017, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mrs. Chilton was born January 4, 1927, in Surry County, one of six children born to the late William Lee and Lindia Jane Bowman McCreary. Nora retired from Spencer’s Inc. after 25 years of service and was a faithful member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Chilton, Jr. and Barbara Chilton of Mount Airy and Ronnie and Judy Chilton of Pilot Mountain; five grandchildren and their spouses, Ron Chilton, Jr. and Jennifer Chilton of Mooresville, Jennifer and Sam Hawks of Dobson, Andrew and Lavonna Chilton of Youngsville, Jason and Susan Chilton of Mount Airy, and Tyler and Audra Chilton of Ararat; ten great-grandchildren, Keith Hawks, Aaron Hawks, Isaac Chilton, Hannah Chilton, Sarah Chilton, Samuel Chilton, Corder Reese Chilton, Benson Chilton, Amelia Chilton, and Blakely Chilton; a sister, Brenda Hiatt of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Jayne Hiatt of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chilton was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Fred Coolidge Chilton; two sisters, Edith McCreary and Ersel Young; and two brothers, Clarence McCreary and Oliver McCreary. The funeral service will be held Monday, January 23, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Simmons Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dale Wallace and Ron Chilton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service.
