America lost a defender of liberty and freedom when a true patriot, Norman Powell Webb, passed away on Monday, October 17, 2011. He was born to Robert Lawrence and Amanda Bowman Webb on September 5, 1921, in Wilco, WV, and grew up in Fancy Gap, VA. Norman helped construct the Blue Ridge Parkway Bridge at Fancy Gap and then Fairy Stone Park when he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. He was very proud of his service to our country during World War II when he served as a Sergeant with the 4th Infantry. Norman and the 4th Infantry were the first to hit the Utah Beaches on D-Day, helped stop the Germans advance at the Battle of The Bulge, and was actively involved in the liberation of Paris and Berlin. He earned the Silver Star for Valor, four Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, and several battle citations. He was one of the major developers of the trucking industry in this area by assisting many drivers and trucking company owners and was the co-founder of H & W Trucking and Utility Trailer Sales. Norman served on the Veterans Memorial Park Board, was a member of the VFW Memorial Honor Guard for over 50 years, and was a longtime member of Rocky Ford Christian Church. Norman is survived by his wife, Faye Webb of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Patt and John Butera of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Kim Webb and Tom and Anne Webb, all of Mount Airy; a stepdaughter and her spouse, Kaye and Lynn Frye of Bristol, TN; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Reaford Utt of Fancy Gap, VA; and a sister-in-law, Zephyr Webb of Danville, VA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Opal Edwards Webb; a son, Jimmy; his parents, Robert Lawrence and Amanda Bowman Webb; an infant sister; a stepson, Kenneth Kizer; and four brothers, Charles, Lester, Wiley, and William Webb. Norman's celebration of life will be held at Rocky Ford Christian Church on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Billy Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436.
