Mr. Norwood Ashley “NA” Barnes, Jr., age 90, of Mount Airy passed away peacefully on Thursday morning at the Surry Health and Rehab Center. He was born in Robeson County, NC, August 26, 1932, the son of the late Norwood Ashley Barnes, Sr., and the late Annie Martha Carter Barnes. He was a proud graduate of East Tennessee State University and was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Mr. Barnes was founder and CEO of Unique Background Solutions, and a veteran of the United States Army. Since his move to Mount Airy in 1986, NA immersed himself within the community and maintained a reputation for being a very civic minded person who was always willing to share his time for others. NA’s reputation was established not only through the social presence he carried throughout the community, but also through his dedicated service in the following organizations: Surry Sunrise Rotary; Chairperson of the Staff Parish; Board of Directors of the Mount Airy Youth Foundation; President of the Plantation Place Lane HOA; Mount Airy City Planning Committee; Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity; Chairperson of the Child Care Center of Central United Methodist Church; Chairman of the United Fund; and Board of Directors at Chalet High. Surviving is his wife, Judith Hufham Barnes; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Joe Lamp’l, Amy and Sean Sparks; son, Michael Barnes and his fiancé’ Emily Arrington; grandchildren, Rachel Ann Lamp’l, Amy Casteel Lamp’l, William Ashley Sparks, Ann Patterson Sparks, Cooper Ashley Barnes, and Sawyer Paul Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosalind Casteel Barnes, daughter-in-law, Chelsea Barnes, sister, Theda Mae (Sissy) Lamb, brothers, Mitchell Barnes, Russell Barnes, and David Barnes. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023, 2:00 PM, at Central United Methodist Church of Mount Airy with Dr. Terry Matthews and Rev. Danny Miller officiating. No formal visitation will be held, and a private interment will be held at Oakdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, NC 27030, Central United Methodist Church, 1909 North Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030, or the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted with Moody Funeral Service of Mount Airy.
