Mr. Oather Eugene "Chub" Spade, 78, of 2454 South McKinney Road, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born January 18, 1932, in Greenbrier County, WV, to the late Oather Esco and Rosie Jane Fox Spade. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He loved raccoon hunting with his beloved dogs and his good friends and loved to attend ham shoots with his friends. Mr. Spade was retired from the C&O Railroad as an engineer for 38 years and attended Little Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Dreama Clay Meadows Spade of the home; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Theda Spade of Northwood, OH, Sheila and Dave Sibrel of Grosse Ile, MI, Rita and Jay Kerleroux of Grand Rapids, MI, and Donna and Ben Smith of Toledo, OH; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas and Theresa Spade of Hudsonville, MI, and Ronald Spade of Cocoa Beach, FL; stepsons and their wives, Jarrett and Judy Meadows of Lennen, MI, and Benjamin "Rex" and Kathy Meadows of Clio, MI; thirteen grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Thelma "Sissy" and Gary Wilson of Lewisburg, WV; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jack and Patty Spade of Rainelle, WV, and Acie Spade of Hickory; and a special nephew, Billy Joe Spade of Hico, WV. He also leaves behind many friends and "special friends," Gary and Gail Hanes, Larry Puckett, Tony Martin, and his pastor, the Rev. Bill Watson. In addition to his parents, Mr. Spade was preceded in death by his first wife, Glenna Ellen Thomas Spade; a grandson, Darrell Spade; a sister, Alberta Dunlap; four brothers, Bubby Spade, Billy Spade, Forest Spade, and Letch Spade; and a half-brother, Billy Spade. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy and a funeral service will follow at 8:00 PM in the chapel at Moody Funeral Home. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Bill Watson. Entombment will follow in the Restlawn Memorial Park in Perrysburg, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017; or to Little Mountain Baptist Church, 640 Little Mountain Church Road, Ararat, NC 27007. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care as well as The Woltz Hospice Home for the love and compassion given to Mr. Spade and all our family.
