Mr. Odell Herman Tompkins, 70, of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Tompkins was born March 28,1940, in Alleghany County, to the late Young Haywood and Rachie Lou Tompkins. He read his Bible every day and was a firm believer in Jesus Christ. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a tile installer and was an avid golfer. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Carol Ellen Bowman Tompkins of the home; a daughter, Melinda Carol Moran of East Bend; two sons, Odell Haywood Tompkins and Henry Rosevelt Tompkins, both of the home; three grandchildren, Odell Tyler Tompkins, Patrick Scott Anderson, and Brandon Reece Boyd; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Gelene and Daniel Hughes of Raleigh and Marie Cline of Winston-Salem; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Sherman and Hattie Tompkins of Lowgap and Walter and Mae Greene of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Betsy and Wylie Ramsey of Winston-Salem and Frances and Jimmy Whicker of Walkertown; a brother-in-law and his wife, James and Phyllis Bowman of Walkertown; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tompkins was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Tilley; and a brother, Clarence Greene. A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 29, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Little Pine Church of the Brethren Cemetery, with Minister James Dunnagan officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to express an "awesome special thanks" to all of Mr. Tompkins' golfing friends at Stonewall Golf Course in Germanton and the staff of Hospice Palliative Care in Winston-Salem.
