Ona Mae Puckett

Ona Mae Puckett, 93, of Burgaw, formerly of Mount Airy, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009. She was born July 5, 1915, in Patrick County, VA, the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Bondurant and Joellen Scales Bondurant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Puckett; and a daughter, Betty Jo Puckett. She graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1933 and later received her bachelor's degree from Radford College and a master's of education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Ona Mae was an educator, who taught school for more than 40 years in the Carroll County, Virginia, and Mount Airy city school systems. Teaching was her passion. More than an educator, she was a person who loved her family and was always interested in how and what they were doing. Nothing pleased her more than large family gatherings on her son's and daughter-in-law (she called her daughter) horse farm. She also enjoyed telling stories to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren about how things use to be during the depression of the 30's, war in the 40's, and just growing up in a big family on a large farm in Carroll County, Virginia. Her later years were spent working in the flowers with the family, reading any book she could find, and just watching the horses play. Surviving are a son, Harry Puckett and his wife, Tanya, of Burgaw; a daughter, Ann Kahan and husband, Dr. Barry Kahan, of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren, Frank Puckett, Melissa Miller, and Lee Kahan; and three great-grandchildren, Brice Miller, Cassidy Miller, and Olivia Puckett. Additionally, she is survived by sisters, Lucy Sorensen of Tuolume, CA, Mary Copeland of Winston-Salem, Elva Neal of Mount Airy, and Gaye Robinson and her husband, Claude, of Cana, VA. Her knowledge, dry wit, and sense of humor will surely be missed by all who knew her. A private family graveside service will be held in God's Acre at Grace Moravian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to support with your donations your local hospice.
