Mrs. Opal Pauline Hutchens, 84, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hutchens was born March 21, 1923, in Surry County, to John Necola Bryant, Sr. and Bessie Peele Bryant. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Dale Smith of Tobaccoville; grandchildren, Susan Redmond, Melanie Lewis, and Jason Hutchens; four step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; ten great-stepgrandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Ruby Hatcher of Mt. Airy; two brothers, Hugh Bryant of White Plains and Ray Bryant of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hutchens was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Oland Hutchens; a son, Larry Thomas Hutchens; a granddaughter, Theresa Hutchens; five sisters, Ruth Fulp, Sue Jenkins, Ethel Vestal, Sallie Key, and Mary Flippen; and four brothers, John Bryant, Jr., Jack Bryant, Bill Bryant, and Jim Bryant. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Lee Strange. Burial will follow in the Rockford Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
