Mrs. Opal Lee Ashburn Parker, 89, of 2026 Woodland Drive, Mount Airy, passed away early Wednesday morning, February 13, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Parker was born January 3, 1924, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Luther and Beatrice Morton Ashburn. Opal was a dedicated Christian and a charter member of Woodland Baptist Church. She will be remembered by her family as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Gray and Sandra Parker, Steve and Beverly Parker, and Darrell Parker, all of Mount Airy, and Greg Parker of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Stefanie Parker of Pilot Mountain, Sam Parker and his wife, Ingle, of Cana, VA, Cory Parker and Kristen Parker, both of Mount Airy, and Adam Parker and his wife, Emily, of England; three great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; a sister, Juanita Ashburn Nichols of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Vera Ashburn of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; two special friends, Marty Shelton of Mount Airy and Gordon Leonard of Charlotte; and three special caregivers, Jean Edwards, Carol Smith, and Marie Lane, all of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Elbert Parker; two sisters; and four brothers. The funeral service will be held Friday, February, 15, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Jimmy Slate and the Rev. Rawley "Dink" Haynes, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
