Mr. Ora Denny Holder, 75, of Mount Airy, went home peacefully to be with his Lord on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Denny was born May 10, 1947, in Surry County, to the late Ora Lee and Annie Maude Surratt Holder. He was a brick mason, ran his own business, and later worked for many years as a supervisor for Greenwood and Charles Construction Company. In his younger days, he attended Mount Airy High School where he was a member of the football team. Having grown up on a farm he loved being outdoors and was an avid gardener and home chef. Denny was proud to have honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Denny earned his GED while serving and continued to serve by being involved in local military organizations, where he was a lifetime member. He served as Commander of Post 2019 Veteran of Foreign Wars and Commander of American Legion Post 123 in Mount Airy. He continued serving as North Carolina Commander of American Legion District 18. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and Vietnam Veterans of American, where he helped countless veterans. Denny was a member and past Master of Granite Lodge #322 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Oasis Shriners.
Denny loved the Lord and sharing God’s Word. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether attending races or going out for a meal with his family or friends. Never knowing a stranger, Denny would talk with anyone and everyone and before you knew it, he would have everyone around laughing. Denny was a loving husband, stepfather, grandpa, brother and friend. He lived his values, and everyone who was blessed to know him experienced his generosity and love.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, Ora Lee and Maude Surratt Holder; first wife, Trudy Doss Holder; step-grandson, Ethen Ring; three brothers, Marvin, Grover, and Tommy Holder; two sisters, Mona Ann Lawson and Laverne Holder; two brothers-in-law Tommy Anthony and Hal Nichols
He is survived by his beloved wife, Candace Simmons Ring Holder; stepchildren, John, Adam (Honesty), Jerry Ring; step-grandchildren, Tyler Ring, Rachel (Isiah) Cave, Isaac Ring; and three sisters, Shelby Anthony, Yvonne Nichols, and Jane (Mike) Utt.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 16, 2022, at Highland Park Baptist Church with burial to follow at Skyline Memorial Gardens with full military honors and Masonic rites. Dr. Darrell Tate and Rev. Jim Richland will officiate the services. Family will receive friends Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Highland Park Baptist Church.
