Pastor Oscar Hasten Hill, 82, of Cana, VA, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday morning, July 24, 2024, from the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Pastor Hill was born July 9, 1942, in Carroll County, VA, one of six children born to the late Willie Cecil and Sarah McCraw Hill. Oscar grew up in Cana, VA, and graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1960. Oscar was a natural businessman and, from a young age, worked in the family business, Hill’s General Store (Hill’s Shoes), until passing the torch to the third generation and “retiring” to devote more time to raising his Angus cattle. But above all, he was a follower of Christ who had a heart for his community. Whether it was forgiving debts incurred in the grocery store, sitting with friends and neighbors during challenging times as their pastor, or creating opportunities for the community children to play ball through his work with the local booster club, he was always serving the community and his Lord. Ordained to the gospel ministry in 1986, he pastored 36 years at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Cana, VA, Flat Ridge Baptist Church in Cana, VA, Crooked Oak Baptist Church in Laurel Fork, VA, and New Life Baptist Church in Mount Airy, as interim pastor until his health prevented him from continuing. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Dawson Hill; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Todd and Delores Hill and Tim Hill; his grandchildren, Kyla Hill, Kirby and Ethan Meadows, and Krissa Hill; his great-grandchildren, Jackson Meadows, Kennedy Meadows, Mika Troutman, and Elliot Troutman; several nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend, Ralph Berrier. In addition to his parents, Pastor Hill was preceded in death by five siblings and their spouses, W.O. “Osler” and Edith Hill, Opal and Curtis King, Olin and Opaline Hill, Ozia and Layton Hawks, and Orene and Junior Leonard. A service of worship and celebration of Oscar’s life will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Sechrist officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Gideons International, Memorial Bible Program, P.O. Box 1032, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
