Pastor William Collis “Bill” Shelton, 76, of Dobson, passed away Tuesday morning, July 25, 2017, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Pastor Shelton was born April 21, 1941, in Richmond County, the son of the late Collis Bernard and Sadie Wood Shelton. Pastor Shelton was a graduate of Candor High School in Candor and Fruitland Bible College in Hendersonville. He spent 54 years of his life in the ministry and pastored Fisher River Baptist Church and Open Door Baptist Church for 47 years. His heart was always in preaching and teaching his church family. Oftentimes, he stated he would never retire from the ministry. Subsequently, he preached from his hospital bed for 16 months. He was a faithful minister of the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Bill worked in the exterminating business as a technician and manager for 37 years, retiring from Terminix Exterminating Company in 2007. His hobbies were hunting and fishing and he took great pride in a manicured lawn. He also enjoyed riding his tractor and the great outdoors. Pastor Shelton loved his family, and they will always miss his sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Christine Tillman Shelton of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Donna Shelton of King; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Bill West of Winston-Salem and Karen and Ricky Bottoms of Rural Hall; two grandchildren, Denise Farlow of Browns Summit and Kayla Simmons of Ararat; two great-grandchildren, Haythan Farlow and Hayleigh Farlow; and two sisters, Bernice Shelton of Robbins and Brenda Speegle of Southern Pines.
