Peggy Elizabeth Childress Carpenter

Mrs. Peggy Elizabeth Childress Carpenter, 70, of Mount Airy, passed Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at Brian Center in Winston-Salem. She was born March 5, 1939, in Surry County, to Devader Wood Childress and the late Eugene Monroe Childress. Mrs. Carpenter retired as a telephone operator and was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Jeff Marion of Rural Hall and Becky and Jimmy Tomlin of Greensboro; grandchildren, Rebecca Marion, Michael and wife Shannon Marion, and Jeremy and wife Alicia Marion, Ashley Tomlin, Caroline Tomlin, Travis Carpenter, and Carrie and husband Garrett Goad; three great-grandchildren, Amiyah Marion, Kasey, and Allyson Torres; her mother, Devader Wood Childress; and a brother, Roger Childress and fiancee, Leslie Hutchens, of Dobson; a special family member, Don Hiatt of Cana, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by her husband, James Roland Carpenter, Jr.; a son, James Montgomery "Monty" Carpenter; and an infant son, James Roland Carpenter, III. The funeral service will be held Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eddie Honeycutt officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Brian Center for the wonderful care Mrs. Carpenter was given during her illness.
