Peggy Joann Smith Chilton

Mrs. Peggy Joann Smith Chilton, 72, of 108 Burnley Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Monday, October 4, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. She was born February 20, 1938, in Surry County, to the late James Robert "Koot" and Ruth Glass Smith. She was a retired legal secretary and office manager for Folger and Folger Attorneys with 43 years of service. Mrs. Chilton was a member of the American Business Women's Association and the Legal Secretary Association. Joann was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church, where she had served as pianist and organist. Surviving are her husband, Robert Herman Chilton, Jr. of the home; a daughter, Denise Chilton Cundiff of Richmond, VA; two grandchildren, Amanda Lynn Cundiff of Saluda and Jeremy Ryan Cundiff of Concord; a sister, Patricia S. Tilley of Advance; three nieces and nephews, Julia Carol Simmons of Franklin, Joseph Ray Simmons, Jr. of Old Fort, and Janet Elizabeth Simmons of Atlanta, GA; and a great nephew, Ian Josiah Simmons of Winston-Salem. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chilton was preceded in death by a daughter, DeLana Dawn Chilton; and a brother, Robert "Buddy" Smith. A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 7, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Richard Loman officiating. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
