Penny Elizabeth Vernon returned home to our Father in Heaven on November 13, 2020 with family at her side. Penny was born on May 2, 1961 in Mt. Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, where she grew up and lived throughout her life. Penny attended the Children's Center for the Physically Handicapped until she was one of the first disabled children to be mainstreamed into the public school system. She graduated in 1980 from Surry Central High School. Penny loved sitting at her record player playing all genres of music, she looked forward to her traditional family beach trips each summer, and shopping, always sure to have money in her pocket book. Penny was and will always be a hero to all that knew her. Her spirit was a gift to be desired and her quick whit was always a surprise and would give a good laugh. The family would like to give a heart felt thank you to Bayada, especially her personal care givers, and to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, for the compassion that was received during her last days of her precious life. Other organizations the family would like to thank are the Special Olympics, Easter Seals and Life Span, as well as her church family at Grace Moravian Church. Penny was preceeded in death by her father Lacy S. Vernon and is survived by her mother Annie Lee Vernon, siblings Terry Vernon Natterer and spouse Roland Natterer and David Lee Vernon and spouse Beverly Vernon. She was also survived by nephews Joshua, Paul, and Lee and nieces Jo Ellen, Melissa, and Hannah. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to Grace Moravian Church in her loving memory. Family and friends are welcomed to attend the visitation, beginning at 12:30 and funeral services, beginning at 2:00, on Monday, November 16, 2020. Visitation and funeral services will be held at Moody Funeral Home and the grave side service will be held in God's Acre at Grace Moravian Church. Please respect family wishes to wear a mask when you are in attendance.
