Phillip "Phil" Henry Poteat

Mr. Phillip Henry Poteat passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 9, 2021, after a short battle with cancer.  He was born May 17, 1949, to the late Tollie H. Poteat and Inez Willard Poteat Bass.  Phillip graduated from Mount Airy High School.  He retired from Duke Energy as a lineman after 35 years, then returned to work at Pike Electric for ten years.  Phil was an avid fisherman and enjoyed riding motorcycles and horses in his days.  He attended Holy Cross Missionary Baptist Church.  Phil was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.  Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Snow Poteat; daughter, Allison Poteat; son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Alaine Poteat; the lights of his life, grandson Elliott Poteat and granddaughter Natalie Poteat; mother-in-law, Elaine Snow (all of Mount Airy); stepsister, Kay Willard of Pfafftown; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews as well as many special friends and neighbors.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Inez Willard Bass; father and stepmother, Tollie and Bertha Poteat; sister, Linda Roberts; father-in-law, James Snow, Jr.; and special nephew, Jerrald Mitchell.  A service to celebrate Phil’s life will be held Thursday, January 14, 2020, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Woodrow Holder and Rev. Don Whichard officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home Thursday from 12:30 PM until the time of the service.  The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the compassion and care shown by the Mountain Valley Hospice team (Amy Poindexter, FNP, April Badgett, RN, and Penny Smith, CNA); as well as Dr. Mark Dodd of Novant Surry Medical Associates and Michelle Snow of Advanced Home Care for their wonderful care and compassion during the past two years.  Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or The Jerrald Mitchell Scholarship Fund, 141 New Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030.  Moody Funeral Services is proudly serving the Poteat family.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
