Miss Phyllis Maud Gates, Lt. Col USAF Ret. Age 80 of 3102 Summit Hills Trail Mt. Airy, passed away Wednesday April 30, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem. She was born in Patrick County, VA on February 9, 1928 to the late Dr. Arthur Marion Gates and Maybelle Lowry Gates. She was a graduate from NC Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, received a BS in nursing from the University of Virginia, a MS in Nursing Education from the University of PA. She taught at Medical College of GA School of Nursing and Northwestern State College of LA before starting her military career. Miss Gates served in Vietnam in 1966 and again in 1970. She was a graduate of Air Command and Staff College and National Defense College. She was a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian at Surfside, SC, Mobile Meals, Helping Hands, The Food Closet and Hospice of Surfside. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews and by three sisters-in-law Alene Gates of Mt. Airy, Estelle Gates of Wytheville, VA and Betty Conder of Charlotte. In addition to her parents, Miss Gates was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille McGahee; brothers, Arthur Gates, Jr., Stuart Gates and Horace Gates. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Fellowship Church in Ararat, VA with services conducted by Rev. Kelly Giese with burial to follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy where her body will remain until the time to be taken to the church for the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made the Forsyth Palliative Care Unit, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston Salem, NC. 27103.
