Mrs. Polly King Cox, 90, a beloved mother, grandmother, and lifelong resident of Mount Airy, passed away Monday, December 30, 2024, at Ridgecrest Retirement Community. Mrs. Cox was born July 8, 1934, in Surry County, one of five daughters born to the late Hugh Wilbur and Mary Lena Beasley King. Polly was known for her fierce love for her family, her unwavering faith, and her lifelong dedication to her community. She was a lifelong Moravian and a dedicated member of Grace Moravian Church, where she found both strength and solace. She spent many years at Cross Creek Country Club, where her warm spirit and hard work touched the lives of all who crossed her path. Whether she was hosting family gatherings, lending a helping hand, or cheering on her children and grandchildren, her family was always at the heart of her life. Polly was also a passionate sports enthusiast, with a special love for Mount Airy High School sports, and she was inducted into the Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tommy and Donna Cox and John Cox; her grandchildren, Anna and Carlin Byrd, Maggie and Joe Liederbach, Victoria and Tal Stephanides, and Carson Cox; her great-grandchildren, Moriah Byrd, Elijah Byrd, and Jacob Byrd; a sister, Frankie King Caudle; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, William Grey “Bill” Cox; and three sisters, Wilma King Travis, Barbara King Forrest, and Erline King Miller. A service of worship and celebration of Polly’s life will be held Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Grace Moravian Church, with the Rev. Andrew Heil officiating. Burial will follow at God’s Acre. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 until 3:00 PM at the church. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love, care, and compassion shown by the staff at Ridgecrest Retirement Community and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Moravian Church, 1401 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, P.O. Box 325, Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
