Mr. Porter Herman Newman, 85, of 275 North Franklin Road, Mount Airy, passed away Friday morning, April 3, 2009, at Central Continuing Care. Mr. Newman was born April 1, 1924, in Surry County, to the late Claude Turner and Martha Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cagle Newman. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II, and was a brick and rock masonry contractor. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #123. Mr. Newman was a 26 year member of the Franklin Ruritan Club, where had perfect attendance. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he had served on various committees. Surviving are his wife, Janice Blackburn Newman of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Steve Gause and Renee and Mike Francis, all of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Lauren Francis, Jordan Francis, Carol Gause, and Kendal Gause, all of Mount Airy; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Bertha Coulson, Anita and Ardeen Mosley, and Lawrence Wilson, all of Mount Airy, Ella Mitchell of Monk's Corner, SC, and Wilner and Bob Purdy of Hampton, VA; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Raymith Newman and Monroe and Naomi Newman, all of Mount Airy, Dillard Newman of Newport News, VA, and Mrs. C.L. "Evelyn" Newman of Mount Airy; and special extended family, Tony Chrissman of Raleigh and Mike and Paige Cartledge of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newman was preceded in death by a sister, Vernell Wilson; and a brother, C.L. Newman. The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 3:30 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Pastor David Burgess and the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of Central Continuing Care, Mike and Paige Cartledge, and the members of Calvary Baptist Church for their love during this difficult time.
