Mr. Preston Emmit Carpenter, 88, of Mt. Airy passed away on Friday July 6, 2007 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born in Surry County on May 5, 1919 to the late David Reid and Nancy Emiline Goings Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter was retired from United States Department of Agriculture as an Inspector and was a veteran of U.S. Army having served our country during World War II. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of sixty-nine years, Opal Wolfe Carpenter of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Ray Simpson of Mt. Airy, Mary and J. V. Lowe of Dobson and Brenda Kay Francis of Durham; ten grandchildren, Gaye Holyfield, Dean Simpson, Jean Spencer, Sammy Simpson, James R. Simpson, Jr. Lisa Lowe, Javey Lowe, Jr. Lynn Nassar, Lon Lowe and Nicole Francis; fifteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and Dave Byrd of Bethania and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carpenter was preceded in death by two sisters, Magdalene Varner and Frances Carpenter; four brothers, James, Paul, Lee and John William Carpenter. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Monday at Blues Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Sammy Lawson and Rev. Steve Mosley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mt. Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mtn. Post 9436. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Moody-Davis Funeral Home of Dobson where his body will remain until the time to be carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care 401 Technology Lane Suite 200 Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
