Mr. Ralph James Gammons, 92, of 470 Mount Herman Church Road, Mount Airy, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 30, 2009, at Village Care of King. He was born April 5, 1916, in Surry County, to the late Joel and Mary Hiatt Gammons. He was a retired farmer and a member of Indian Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Bracky Rogers and Phyllis and Terry Newman, all of Mount Airy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Alton and Carol Gammons, Cleon and Linda Gammons, and Arvil and Janie Gammons, all of Mount Airy; a stepson and his wife, Robert Allen and Lil Edwards of Mount Airy; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Mark and Deidre Rogers, Susan and Sam Holder, Greg and Michelle Gammons, Kenny and Tammy Gammons, Tim Gammons, Kevin Gammons, Angela and Monty Leonard, Cindy and Chuckee Simmons, and Jeremiah Davis; fourteen great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; and a sister, Alzry Nunn of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gammons was preceded in death by first wife, Bernice Jessup Gammons; his second wife, Myrtle Edwards Gammons; a stepson, Don Edwards; three sisters, Lizzie Draughn, Eva Hiatt, and Versie Gammons Lambert Hiatt; and a brother, Adam Gammons. The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 2, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Tommy Floyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Westfield Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Arvil and Janie Gammons, 470 Mount Herman Church Road, Mount. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to the charity of donor's choice. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of Village Care of King for the love and care extended to Mr. Gammons.
