On Thursday, April 23, 2009, Ransey Dowell Johnson, Jr. passed away at Village Care of King at the age of 80. He was born December 28, 1928, in Mount Airy, the son of the late Ransey Dowell Johnson, Sr. and Josephine Webster Johnson. He was the oldest of four siblings. On August 8, 1947, he married Nellie Bowman. Mr. Johnson served the United States Navy on the USS Gunston Hall, an aircraft carrier, and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was retired from Pine State Knitwear. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lavonne and Dennis E. Moore of Mount Airy; a son, Rickey D. Johnson of Winston-Salem; a grandson and his wife, Justin and Beth Moore of Mount Airy; and two great-grandsons, Charles Ransey Moore and Scott Dennis Moore of Mount Airy. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Loredith Johnson of Mount Airy, Lorraine Johnson of North Kingston, RI, and Anne Johnson of Cana, VA; a special friend, Herbert Faw of Pilot Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Bowman Johnson; an infant daughter, Shelby Jean Johnson; an infant sister, Loraine Johnson; and two brothers, Clyde Johnson and Archie Johnson. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 4:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery, with Pastor Dennis E. Moore officiating. Military honors will also be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 to 3:45 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
