Ray Chester Goins

Mr. Ray Chester Goins, 89, of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021, at his home.  Mr. Goins was born July 2, 1931, in Surry County, to the late Reid and Lonie Byrd Goins.  He was a sweet, loving husband, father, Pa, and friend.  His kind spirit and joyful smile touched all who knew him.  Mr. Goins was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church and retired from Hanes Brands in Winston-Salem after 40 years of service.  In retirement, he managed Neighbors Store at The Square for several years.  Ray was past master of Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM and was a longtime member of Oasis Shrine and Surry Shrine Club.  Left behind to cherish his memories are his wife of 71 years, Vernell Towe Goins; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Curtis Poindexter; a son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Libby Goins; his grandchildren, Nicole and Daryl Childress, Benny Goins, Jr., Brooke and Kevin Ray, Summer and Josh Snow, Monica Everhart and Freddy Hudson, Adam Stanfield and Christopher Wilson, and Grey and Cristina Dominguez; his great-grandchildren, Audrey Childress, Ella Claire Goins, Benny Goins, III, Parker Ray, Everly Ray, Lakyn Ray, Tanner Snow, Forde Snow, Bauer Snow, Cayden Hudson, Emory Everhart, Saylor Hudson, and Lucien Dominguez; and a sister, Margaret Goins McBride.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Goins was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Sparks; and five brothers, F.H. Goins, Claude Goins, Arthur “Bud” Goins, Harrison Goins, and Fred Goins.  The funeral service will be held Sunday, February 7, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin and Dr. David Sparks officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with full Masonic rites conducted by Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF and AM.  There will not be a formal visitation at the church.  The family respectfully requests that everyone wear a mask and social distance.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC  27030; or The Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 North Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL  33607.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
