Ray Jesse Sutphin

Mr. Ray Jesse Sutphin, 78, of Ararat, VA, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, VA. Mr. Sutphin was born April 16, 1931, in Surry County, to the late Mason and Etta Young Sutphin. He was a retired farmer and a member of Faith Baptist Church. Mr. Sutphin is survived by his wife, Janie Irene Bowman Sutphin of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Eddie Fleming and Carolyn and Jon Flippin, all of Ararat, VA, Sandra and Carlos Rose of Orange Park, FL, and Connie and Jimmy Smith of King; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Frances Sutphin of Ararat, VA; five grandchildren and a spouse, Chris Sutphin and Clay Flippin, both of Ararat, VA, Josh and Katrina Sutphin of Claudville, VA, and Andrew Smith and Emily Smith, both of King; a great-grandson, Benjamin Sutphin of Claudville, VA; a sister, Beulah Sutphin of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law and his wife,, Harry Lee and Juanita Bowman of Ararat, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sutphin was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Hiatt and Claudia Payne; and a brother, Earlie "Buck" Sutphin. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, June 22, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Randy Edwards and the Rev. Barry Clement officiating. Burial will follow in the New Beginnings Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:00 noon until the time of the service.
