Mr. Raymith Earl Newman, 89, of Mount Airy, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, with his loving family by his side. Mr. Newman was born January 4, 1921, in Carroll County, VA, son of the late Claude Turner Newman and Martha Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cagle Newman. He was a farmer, retired from Proctor-Silex, and a devoted member of Mayberry Baptist Church. Mr. Newman was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army from 1942 - 1946. Mr. Newman enjoyed playing his harmonica and was well known for playing with the group "From the Heart." Surviving are four daughters and two sons-in-law, Josie Faye Dodson of Collinsville, VA, Patricia "Pat" and Lem Nolen of Martinsville, VA, Karen Sue Turner of Bassett, VA, and Vickie Lynn and Johnny Wimbish of Mount Airy; ten grandchildren, Sheila Faye Marion and husband, Terry, of Mount Airy, Lt. Col. Gray Cockerham and wife, Dr. Anne Cockerham, of Chantilly, VA, Melissa Stanley of Collinsville, VA, Shelby Cave of Scottsdale, AZ, Amy Lynn Akers and husband, Daniel, of Martinsville, VA, Jay Cave and wife, Aleisha, of Lowgap, Coye Kistler of Nashville, TN, Christopher Kistler of Bassett, VA, and Elizabeth "Nicole" Wimbish and James Michael Wimbish, both of Mount Airy; two stepgrandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and a spouse, Brandon and Misty Marion, Robby Cockerham, Matthew Cockerham, Ryan Akers, Kara Haskins, Zoey Akers, Tyler Oakes, Alayna Cave, Jesse Dean Branch, William Ronald Cave, and Shane Cave; three step-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bertha Mae Coulson and Anita and Ardeen Mosley, all of Mount Airy, Ella Mitchell of Goose Creek, SC and Wilner and Bob Purdy of Hampton, VA; two brothers, Monroe Newman of Mount Airy and Dillard Newman Shackleford, VA; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Newman and Janice Newman, both of Mount Airy; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Wilson of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, David Hundley of Henry, VA; and many loving friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Collins Newman; a sister, Vernell Wilson; two brothers, Porter Newman and C.L. Newman; and two infant brothers. The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Mayberry Baptist Church, with Dr. Craig Edwards, the Rev. Randy Bartley, the Rev. Johnny Johnson, and Lt. Col. Gray Cockerham officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with full military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday, September 3, 2010, from 6:00 until 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, and other times at the Newman home. The family would like to express a special thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice, Dr. Burciu and his staff, and the staff of the Surry County Senior Services for their loving care during their dad's illness and for all the special prayers, visits, food, and other acts of kindness from his friends and neighbors during this difficult time.
