Mr. Raymond Eugene Cox, 87, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at his home. Mr. Cox was born February 26, 1921, in Surry County, to William Albert and Dora Bell Ashburn Cox. Mr. Cox served our county in the United States Army during World War II. He was retired from the Surry County School System after being a vocational teacher at Surry Central and North Surry high schools. Surviving are his loving wife, Irene Wilson Cox of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Samantha and David Hicks of Mount Airy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Rusty and Elisabeth Cox of Whitsett, Jerry and Lisa Cox of Winston-Salem, and Terry and Shannon Cox of King; grandchildren, Melissa Hicks, Monica Hicks, Katie Montgomery, Adam Cox, Chase Cox, Spencer Cox, Raymond "Luke" Cox, Emily Cox, and Noah Cox; a great-grandchild, Mason Stone; two sisters, Maude Cox of Hickory and Hazel Kayler of Durham; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Annabelle Cox of Mount Airy and Jack and Lib Cox of Charlotte. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cox was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Hicks, Beulah Hamilton, and Ilabell Cox. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, November 30, 2008, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Lane Sapp, the Rev. Bill Gibson, and Elder J.D. Belton. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice and to Linda Surratt for all the love and care given to Mr. Cox during his illness.
