Rebecca "Becky" Shreves

            Mrs. Rebecca (Becky) Carter Shreves, age 76 of Glade Hill, passed away Friday, January 18, 2019.  She was born in Martinsville on August 28, 1942 to the late Raymond Avery Carter and Vaughnie Maxey Carter.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Carter; an infant sister, a step-daughter, Michelle S. Workman; a great grandson, Christian Placer; and her beloved dogs, Beaver and Sam.  Becky grew up in Figsboro and graduated from Bassett High School in 1960.  She worked at DuPont, was a CNA at Salem Hospital, Huff Cook Insurance, and was a co-owner of ETI of Martinsville.  She was of a strong Baptist faith.  Becky, also known as “Granny Beck” was a strong, feisty woman who wasn’t afraid to tell you what she thought or put you in your place when you needed it.  She was a good ole country girl who wasn’t afraid of a hard day’s work.  She was a great wife, mom, step-mother, granny, great granny, great great granny, aunt, sister, and in-law.  She enjoyed caring for others, playing with her grandchildren, sharing stories of growing up on a tobacco farm, gardening and mowing grass, flowers, landscaping, remodeling and interior decorating, playing Rook with her friends, Candy Crush and Facebook, painting, talking on the phone, and her dog.  People say her Christmas decorations belonged in magazines, her fried chicken was the best this side of heaven, and her feisty spunk and laughter made their days.  She never met a stranger, and within a few minutes of conversation could actually link anyone to her family tree.  Over the years, she took care of many aunts, uncles, and grandchildren.  She loved the Lord and knew she was headed for Glory.  Before she passed, she said, “This isn’t goodbye but see ya later.”

            Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Paul R. Shreves of the home; one daughter, Debbie Adkins-Foley and husband, Stanley of Snow Creek; one son, David Biggs and wife, Doris of Cherokee Village, AR; four step-daughters, Melissa S. Freeze and husband, Tony of Harrisonburg, Crystal S. Naff and husband, Michael of Callaway, Jenny S. Flora and husband, Andy of Rocky Mount, Bethany S. Moore and husband, John of Staunton; special adopted grandchildren, Mandy M. Placer and husband, Ben of Sistersville, WV, Jamie Mathis of Fairmont, Michael Mathis of Clarksburg, WV; 11 grandchildren, Ridge Adkins, Rachael and Lauren Naff, Jacob Flora, Hannah and Sara Moore, Zach, Alyson, and Branden Placer, Roxanne McManamay, and J.W. Workman; five great grandchildren, Raustyn and Tiauna Mathis, Lexi Mathis, Nicole and Trevor McManamay; one sister, Maxine Wells and husband, George of Martinsville; a special niece, Robin Nuttall and husband, Mark of Winston-Salem, NC; three nephews, Kenneth, Stephen, and William Wells; and many cherished in-laws, family, and friends.

            A memorial service will be held Monday, January 21, 2019 at 6:00 PM at Collinsville Baptist Church with Rev.
