Mr. Reid William “Bill” Johnson, Sr., 95, of Pilot Mountain, passed away Friday, August 3, 2018. He was born January 22, 1923, in Surry County, to the late Coley Oscar and Flora Belle Lynch Johnson. After working for Armtex, Inc. in Pilot Mountain for 32 years, Bill retired as finishing plant supervisor. He also farmed, raised cattle, and enjoyed making beautiful items in his woodworking shop. Mr. Johnson attended Westfield Friends Church and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9436, Pilot Mountain, a member of the 389th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, United States Army, having served his country during World War II, stationed in California and the Philippines. Surviving family are a son and daughter-in-law, Reid William “Bill” Johnson, Jr. and Katrina Johnson of Goodview, VA; a daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and David Haymore of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Reid (Michelle) Johnson of Fincastle, VA, Jennifer Johnson of Nashville, TN, Amanda (David) Coble of Mooresville, and Daniel (Erin) Haymore of Pinnacle; his great-grandchildren, Ethan, Savanna, and Kaylee Johnson of Fincastle, VA, Maddie, Andrew, and Ellie Coble of Mooresville, and Emilynn and Davis Haymore of Pinnacle; his in-laws, Don and Lucy Mills and Barbara Mills, all of Mount Airy; and several special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Genevieve Mills Johnson; a brother, Robert Johnson; three sisters, Ruby Lynch, Elizabeth Smith, and Irene Lynch; another brother who died at birth; four brothers-in-law, Woodrow Smith, John P. Lynch, Brockley Lynch, and John Mills; and two sisters-in-law, Ola Mae Mills Matthews and June Mills Childress. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Twelve Oaks Senior Living, Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, and Kindred Home Care for their loving and compassionate care and support. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at 11:30 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Linda Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 until 11:30 AM at the funeral home.
