Rev. Bernard D. Handy, age 87 of Stuart passed away Saturday at his home. He was born in Patrick County on June 8, 1926 to the late Fernell Handy and Arta Overby Handy. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by four sisters, Evelyn Compton, Betty Barrow, Nessie Handy, Nellie Handy; and five brothers, Herbert, Clyde, Ben, and Harry Handy, and one infant brother. He served in the US Army during WWII; retired from United Elastic; and had been in the Ministry for 28 years. He had a Worship program on WHEO for 26 years. He was a longtime member of Wayside Community Church and had served as the Pastor for the last 7 years. The Lord has lost one of his most faithful servants but now he is in a better place watching over all who knew and loved him.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Pearl Layman Handy of the home; one son and daughter in law, Danny and Cynthia Handy of Moneta; beloved grandson, Brandon Handy of Moneta; one sister, Janie and Otis Pauley of Jasper, GA; a special brother in law and sister in law, Paul and Ruby Layman of Patrick Springs; and several other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Donnie Conner, Rev. Jim Churchwell, and Pastor Mark Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Russell Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 22099 Jeb Stuart Hwy., Stuart, VA 24171.
