The Rev. Charles Edward Powers, 64, of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 21, 2022, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem. The Rev. Powers was born February 5, 1958, in Rockingham County, the younger of two sons born to the late Eugene Edward and Dollie Marie Wyatt Powers. The Rev. Powers was licensed to the work of the gospel ministry in 1984 with The Church of God, and he was ordained as a bishop in 1990. He pastored churches in Alabama, Mississippi, and Mount Airy Church of God (1999-2022). He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cathy Diana Thomason Powers of the home; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Amber and the Rev. Michael Mooneyham of Greenwood, MS, Lauren and the Rev. Daylon Mooneyham of Wilson, Jodi Powers of the home, and Lindsey and Michael Moore of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Bradley and Stephanie Powers of Greenville; ten grandchildren, Sarah Mooneyham, Josh Mooneyham, Matthew Mooneyham, Caleb Mooneyham, Ashlie Mooneyham, Faith Mooneyham, Malachi Powers, Skylar Powers, Aubrey Powers, and Wyatt Moore; a grandchild “on-the-way” (due February 2023); and a brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Janet Powers of York, SC. A service of worship and celebration of the Rev. Powers’ life will be held Monday, August 1, 2022, at 3:00 PM at Mount Airy Church of God, with the Rev. Bradley Powers, the Rev. Daylon Mooneyham, and the Rev. Michael Mooneyham officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, August 1, 2022, from 1:30 until 3:00 PM at the church. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to The Gideons International, Memorial Bible Program, P.O. Box 1032, Mount Airy, NC 27030, so the Word will continue to go forth. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
