The Rev. David Fulton Cox, Sr., 74, of Mount Airy, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 9, 2008. The Rev. Cox was born December 16, 1933, in New Hanover County, to Laura Cox Melton and the late Fred Cox, Sr. The Rev. Cox was the chaplain of the Mount Airy Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, Surry County Emergency Medical Services, and Surry County Communications/Operations Center. He was pastor of numerous Southern Baptist churches across North Carolina for 45 years. David proudly organized the "Shield A Badge With Prayer" program for Surry County and surrounding counties. The Rev. Cox was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Ann Brown Cox of the home; his mother, Laura Cox Melton of Mount Airy; a daughter, Cindy Cox Perry of Pfafftown; a son and daughter-in-law, David Fulton Cox, Jr. and Robin Cox of Hamptonville; two grandsons and a spouse, Keith Venable and Kevin and Carrie Venable, all of Mount Airy; two granddaughters, Courtney Cox and Brittany Cox, both of Hamptonville; and a great-granddaughter, Sidney Kate Venable of Mount Airy. In addition to his father, the Rev. Cox was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Lauree Cox; and a brother, Fred Cox, Jr. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at 2:00 PM at Victory Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Tim Miller, the Rev. Gene Miller, the Rev. Bryan Thompson, the Rev. Bailey Elmore, and the Rev. Dennis Barnette. Burial will follow in the Dover Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the David Fulton Cox Chaplain Fund, 901 Old Highway 52 South, Mount Airy, NC 27030, for the establishment of the David Fulton Cox Memorial Scholarship Fund for Basic Law Enforcement Training students. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to their family and friends for the love and support given to them during David's illness and since his passing.
