Rev. Deward A. Scott

The Rev. Deward A. Scott, 92, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.  The Rev. Scott was born August 22, 1930, in Surry County, one of thirteen children born to the late Charlie William and Lucinda “Cindy” Hooker Scott.  Deward was reared in the Flat Rock community and attended Flat Rock High School.  He worked at Harrell Oil Company, retiring as vice-president in 2011, after 60 years of service.  The Rev. Scott was ordained to the work of the gospel ministry nearly 70 years ago.  He served churches throughout rural North Carolina and retired from Flat Rock Church of God.  He lived his life with a servant’s heart, and he volunteered countless hours in several local civic clubs.  He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Annie Louise Wagoner Scott; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Jackie Scott and Ronnie Scott; three stepchildren and their spouses, Gwen and Keith Pendry, Amy and Frank Blankenship, and Matthew and Jodi McDaniel; three grandchildren, Charlie Scott, Amy Scott, and Brian Scott; six stepgrandchildren, Tonya Smith, Bradley Macey, Andrew Hampton, Hailey Alvear, Austin Cooke, and Madison McDaniel; a host of great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Alyene and Haywood Young; two sisters-in-law, Helen Scott and JoEllen Scott; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Michael and Essie Burroughs, Randall and Linda Simmons, Joe Harrell, Phillip and Jean Welch, the staff at 13 Bones, and John Baldwin.  In addition to his parents, the Rev. Scott was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Mae Stanley Scott; six sisters, Hazel McMillian, Nellie Marion, Irene Tilley, Mary Jessup, Helen Key, and Ava Hutchens; and five brothers, Carl Scott, Paul Scott, Herbert Scott, James Clinton “J.C.” Scott, and Gene Scott.  A service of worship and celebration of Deward’s life will be held Sunday, July 30, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Dr. David Sparks and the Rev. Robbie Sizemore officiating.  Interment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.  The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mount Airy, NC  27030.
